What is Mapepeza?

“Mapepeza” or “Mapepereza” is slang term that denotes a person who inciting conversations with their neighbours about a variety of topics and local news (mostly gossip). Its name is supposed to translate to its objective which is an ‘Informer’ or a communicator between the people and institutions.

Weekly Community Newspaper

Mapepeza is regarded as an independent community newspaper which is a mouthpiece for the communities it serves with news and information. Isizulu and Sesotho are the principal languages used in the publication, which are the indigenous languages spoken in the communities. English content is also published to reach a wider, younger audience that demand local content on both print and online platforms.

The Newspaper was founded and owned by Mr Anatola Setenane Mofoka, the Director of Lolliepop Trading and Projects (Pty)Ltd (Publisher). Mapepeza Newspaper is managed by co-founder and editor/manager Mr Stephen Seakgwe.
This newspaper idea came from a need for a multi-lingual Gauteng regional publication, which is both relative and informative to the communities.

The first newspaper was published on 13 September 2013. Printed by: Paarl Coldset CTP in Johannesburg.

The area of distribution is the southern-Gauteng region, which covers the municipalities of Sedibeng District (comprising of Emfuleni, Lesedi, Midvaal municipalities) and the City of Ekurhuleni. Distribution is localized into the urban township communities, namely: (a) Sedibeng edition (in Ratanda/Heidelberg, Sebokeng/Vereeniging and Meyerton/Vaal Marina), and (b) Ekurhuleni (in Duduza, Katlehong, Kwa-Thema, Thokoza, Tsakane, Vosloorus, Springs, Boksburg and Germiston). The newspaper is released every Fridays with an audited circulation of 5000 copies weekly, with an estimated readership of 45,000.

Mapepeza Newspaper subscribes to the South African Press Code and is a proud member of the Association of Independent Publishers, Media Development and Diversity Agency, National Press Club, Ekurhuleni Press Club and various business chambers and forums.
